Transparency and democracy in China

Take note of the limitations on transparency and democracy in this report on Politburo action.

CPC to promote transparency in party affairs
A regulation to promote transparency in party affairs was reviewed and passed at a meeting of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee on Thursday.

The meeting was presided over by Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee.

Promoting transparency in party affairs is "an important step" for the implementation of the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the CPC and a must to developing intra-party democracy and socialist democratic politics, according to a statement issued after the meeting.

The move is of great significance in advancing strict party governance and strengthening intra-party supervision, it said.

Promoting transparency in party affairs should adhere to the right direction and implement Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, said the statement.

Transparency in party affairs should be carried out in the practice of upholding and developing socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era and advancing the great new project of party building, it noted…

Efforts should be made to promote intra-party democracy to protect party members' rights to know, participate, vote and supervise, and to respond to the concerns of party members and the public in a timely manner.

All party committees should enhance their leadership over the work and carry out the regulation(for trial implementation) in light of realities, it said.
