A Sarah Palin moment in Mexico?

Does a president need to be an intellectual? Need he be literate? Does he need to mindful of what he reads?

Mexico's leading presidential contender Enrique Pena Nieto gave new ammunition to his critics this weekend.

Asked to name three books that had had an impact on him, he floundered before saying that, as an adolescent, he had been influenced by the Bible.

Political opponents have often accused Mr Pena Nieto - a handsome and telegenic politician married to a television actress - of being "hollow"…

Blanca Facundo, who teaches in Puerto Rico, reports that the Mexican Twitterverse was alive with reactions to Enrique Pena Nieto's inability to name three books that he's read.

Then, "the gaffe was compounded when his teenage daughter sent out a Twitter message calling his critics 'a bunch of idiots who form part of the proletariat.'"

Blanca reports that the word Pena's daughter used can mean "a bunch of idiots," but that in Puerto Rico it has a more common obscene meaning. She reports that "Mexicans have ben so witty responding, we had many laughs today in my classroom reading tweets."
