From ThisDay in Lagos: Yar'Adua - Reports of My 'Death' Exaggerated

"The whole country had been awash with rumours of the president's "death" since Saturday following reports that he had undergone a surgery and had gone into coma..."

Yar'Adua - Doctors Order More Tests

"Doctors at the King Fahd Armed Forces Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, have asked President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua to take more tests before he can return to Nigeria, family sources told THISDAY yesterday...

"When the next round of tests is completed, THISDAY sources said, the doctors would now decide on the next line of action.

"Meanwhile, a high-level delegation made up of senior government officials may visit the President in Saudi Arabia if he does not return soon. The delegation, THISDAY learnt, may be led by Senate President David Mark.

"A member of the Yar'Adua family told THISDAY last night that the President was very 'keen' to return home and speak on the issue of his health but had to bow to the wishes of the doctors who believe that being a first time visitor to the hospital, he needed to undergo intensive medical examination in order to determine his actual health status.

"He was scheduled to hold consultations with a team of doctors at the hospital in the morning of yesterday in order to review results of the several tests he has had in the last few days, THISDAY reported yesterday.

"Family sources had told THISDAY that the outcome of the checks would determine whether the President would return home immediately or stay back till the weekend to conclude his consultations. Alternatively, it was reported, he could be asked to return at a later date for further examination should it be required..."

Yar'Adua Returns Home

"Although uncertainties continue to persist about the state of the president's health, sources informed THISDAY that the presidency is committed to opening up to the nation in the weeks ahead as there is nothing to hide about the president's condition...

"The matter of Yar'Adua's health has become an issue since the days following his nomination as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the April 19 2007 presidential election when he was rumoured to have died during a medical trip to Germany in the thick of the campaign..."

Yar'Adua's Ill Health - When Will the Hide And Seek Game Stop?

"Question though is why should the status of the president's health be shrouded in mystery or even become such a controversial issue when Nigerians are known to have a large heart gushing with empathy? The answer is to be found closer to the power game that has regrettably become a fixture of governance in Nigeria in superiority to delivering the benefits of the kind of governance that will improve lives...

"At a time when Nigerians should be debating the policies of the government and the likely implications it will have for their welfare and development, they are served dishes about the ill-health of a leader who many still believe was imposed by a president who is desperate to rule behind the curtain after his failed bid to perpetuate himself in office...

"Clearly, going by the political instabilities witnessed in the years from the Abacha regime to the Obasanjo administration, Nigeria is not in need of another poorly managed political crisis. The poor manner the president's handlers handled the crisis surrounding his health gives little room to expect they are competently up to the task should the situation become more dire. Will Yar'adua deliver Nigeria from its long years of political pains? Or will he worsen it?"
