In re: anti-corruption in Nigeria

Two Nigerian newspapers reported on 6 January, that the head of the anti-corruption agency, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, will only be on leave from his position while he attends a training class. And, President Yar'Adua promised to have his appointment approved by the Senate, which had not yet done so.

Ribadu Remains EFCC Chairman - Presidency

"At last, the presidency has put to rest the controversy that greeted the redeployment of the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, from the anti-graft agency...

"[special adviser to the president on communication, Mr. Segun ] Adeniyi also cleared the air on the controversy generated by the decision of the police authorities to send the EFCC boss on a one-year training programme at NIPSS. Mallam Ribadu, the presidential spokesman stated, 'remains the EFCC chairman' despite the fact that he would be proceeding on a course..."

"Reassigned" in January and demoted in July. Ribadu's sponsors are obviously out of power or that he made powerful enemies as head of the anti-corruuption police.

The article also reports a rumor of Ribadu's arrest that could not be confirmed.

Police Demote Ribadu

"True to speculations which had been making the rounds for some time now, the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has been demoted from the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP).

"The demotion is coming about eight months after he was sent on a course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) and quietly removed as EFCC boss.

"His new position is three ranks below the AIG rank with which he enlisted at NIPSS..."
